Do a test with yourself. As you are scrolling through your social media feeds, take note of what catches your attention. Was it moving images? Majority of the time this is what gets people to stop scrolling and pay attention. This is why we explain why you should bring your moving images to life, with tips on how to do it.

Let’s look at some figures

We could tell you about the impact of video on social media, but the numbers speak for themselves.

  • By the end of 2017, video content will represent 74% of all internet traffic
  • Facebook’s users spend 3x more time watching live videos than traditional videos
  • Videos in email lead to a 200-300% increase in click-through rate
  • YouTube reports, mobile video consumption rises 100% every year

Moving imagery formats

Animation is simply combining drawings, photographs, text, or computer graphics to make them move. You don’t need to talk in front of a camera, and it doesn’t need to be long either. In fact, shorter clips are less intimidating and create more engagement.

In a one – to – three-second animated image, the background is typically fixed and only text is animated. This could be made into a slide show or collection of a few images.

A GIF is a silent animated loop often used to convey a feeling. GIFs have become hugely popular on social media where they started appearing in blog posts and emails, and have spread to messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger. These types of animated imagery are great to convey an emotional message, but shouldn’t be used too regularly as it could come across as informal and not on brand.

If you are not quite ready for showing your face on the camera, Instagram Stories’ moving imagery is becoming a crucial part of online marketing. It is a great way to show the face behind the brand, behind the scenes and all the hard work that goes into the final outcome. We give you some great tips on how to guide your viewers to your online content and build website traffic with quick 15-second video updates.

If you are feeling camera shy and want to start off with something less intimidating, use video with text to grab your audience’s attention.

Did you know that 85% of videos on Facebook are watched without sound? This tells us that captions are key. Especially when you there is a lot spoken facts, data and names. Having keywords pop out will help your viewers to catch the information and retain it for longer.

Start creating your moving imagery

Canva has just added an animation function to the program where you can have a fixed background and have a number of options for animating the text. This is great for Instagram Stories as you can customise image size.

To create text animations quickly and easily on your mobile phone, Adobe Spark Post is a great app you could try out. Although you can use Adobe Spark on your browser, the animation function is available only on the iOS mobile app.

For slightly longer videos, of up to 30 seconds, Ripl and Legend are both available on iOS and Android. With Ripl, you can upload up to eight images, add text, and create a slideshow that the app will convert into a video.

Giphy.com is the biggest search engine for existing GIFs if you want to find one to share. Giphy.com also has excellent tools for making your own GIFs if you feel you could create something that is more on brand for your social media platforms.

The trick is to be creative and use different content for different platforms. Don’t forget to always keep track of what your audience is connecting with. If you are getting a high number of views for a specific type of moving imagery, keep working on that and change it up every now and then
